LGBT Youth

LGBT Youth

Rand Skolnick was deeply committed to addressing the challenges of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, which he felt were basic human rights issues that should be addressed across all communities.

A significant donor to many LGBT organizations, Rand went beyond writing checks by building meaningful, lasting relationships and offering support and inspiration to those who work on a daily basis for the LGBT community.

Rand believed in the potential of our youth to help lead us toward a more compassionate and just future. The Palette Fund, like Rand, supports young people as they explore careers in philanthropy and service to the LGBT community and we are excited to honor Rand’s commitment to education.

Why We Do It

  • “The dropout rate [of gay and transgender high school students] is three times that of the national average and twice as many LGBT students report they aren’t going to pursue higher education because of harassment or violence in high school.” Jorge Valencia, Point Foundation
  • 97% of students in public high schools report regularly hearing homophobic remarks from their peers
  • LGBT youth are more than four times as likely to skip whole days of school out of fear
